Expecting a baby is a unique journey, and midwife care provides personalized support throughout pregnancy. Here’s what you can expect at your first appointment.
An initial phone call
After registering, your midwife will contact you by phone to collect essential health information and discuss your needs. This call helps plan certain aspects of your care, such as prenatal screening for genetic conditions or requesting preventive leave from CNESST if needed.
The first appointment
Your first appointment with the midwife will take place between the 10th and 12th week of pregnancy and will last about 120 minutes. This meeting is important to get to know each other and establish a personalized care plan.
During this visit, the midwife will:
- Review your medical and pregnancy history.
- Discuss your feelings about the pregnancy and any support you may need.
- Determine if you are eligible for midwife care.
- Inform you about routine pregnancy tests (blood tests, ultrasounds, etc.).
- Provide prescriptions for necessary ultrasounds and blood tests, which can be done on-site or at your local CLSC.
- Answer all your questions about pregnancy and midwife care.
Monitoring your health and baby’s development
Your midwife will also conduct a physical assessment, including:
- Checking your blood pressure.
- Feeling your abdomen to assess the baby’s position.
- Measuring your uterine height.
- Listening to the baby’s heartbeat.
- Checking for any swelling (edema).
A special moment to ask questions
This first appointment is the perfect time to ask any questions about pregnancy, midwife care, and what to expect in the coming months. Building a trusting relationship with your midwife will help you feel informed and supported throughout your pregnancy. Feel free to prepare your questions in advance to make the most of this essential meeting for both your well-being and your baby’s health.
